Our
History
In the beginning…
Columbus House was established in 1988, sparked by the concern of local educators and business leaders who recognized the challenges faced by students struggling to live at home with no safe or stable alternatives available.
From these conversations, Columbus House was created: a supportive housing option for youth that provides a safe place to live while continuing their education. Alongside academic support, residents learn vital life skills to help them transition toward independent living.
Thanks to the generous support of the Knights of Columbus, Council 1531, Columbus House officially opened its doors in 1990. Our supportive out of home care offers youth the opportunity to continue their education and learn valuable life and employment skills.
In 1999, the Young Parent Support Program (YPSP) was introduced to meet the community's evolving needs. This program empowers young mothers to complete their education and become confident in their parenting skills and knowledge of childhood development.
Since opening its doors, Columbus House has supported and empowered over 2,500 youth across Renfrew County, helping them build brighter, more stable futures.
